ASML: What a Backlog Snapshot Can and Cannot Tell You

Inspect reported backlog balances while keeping undisclosed bridge components unknown.

Published October 4, 2026 · Agent-assisted source review; human review not claimed.

A larger order book leaves a second question

“Backlog increased, so deliveries must be strong.” This inference skips the bridge between two balances. A backlog can rise because additions outrun fulfillment; the closing balance alone does not establish the speed or profitability of conversion.

ASML is a useful worksheet example because the disclosed snapshot is usable while several inputs required by a gross-order bridge remain unidentified.

The dated source snapshot

ASML’s January 28, 2026 results release lists backlog of €35,938 million for FY2024 and €38,797 million for FY2025. The change is 7.96%. FY2025 net bookings are €28,035 million. The company’s definition includes system orders and inflation adjustments with accepted written authorizations; backlog represents amounts not yet recognized as sales.

Why the example keeps four fields blank

Our bridge expects gross additions, separately removed cancellations, fulfillment and signed other adjustments. A net-bookings figure cannot silently become gross additions. Subtracting cancellations again could double count them; placing inflation effects in both additions and other adjustments could do the same.

The cited table does not separately disclose all four components in the form this worksheet requires. We leave them unknown. Total company sales are also not automatically the amount released from a system order backlog: check services, scope and recognition rules first.

It would be possible to solve a missing term algebraically. That would produce a plug, not independent evidence of deliveries. An exact-looking bridge built from a plug cannot verify conversion.

Load and inspect the example

  1. Select Load example to fill opening and closing balances in EUR millions.
  2. Select Calculate / inspect. The tool reports the 7.96% balance change and the missing bridge fields.
  3. Leave release and cancellation rates unavailable until sources establish the appropriate components.

Keep a printed copy with the period, source and unanswered questions. For a complete bridge, every component must share the same scope and accounting period. Reconciliation checks arithmetic; it does not establish contract firmness, margins or cash receipts. Continue with the backlog field guide.
